This landscape project for a new holiday home near the coast was an opportunity to design with locally indigenous plants, as well as favourite Australian native plants, as put forward by the users of the beach house.

Locally sourced materials such as sands, gravels and boulders were used to form the road, carparking and paths. Victorian bluestone was selected for paving and stepping stones.

Presented with a larger than normal block of land, it was possible to layout broad curves and flowing shapes for the garden’s structure. This organic but strong framework supports two sphere-shaped lawn areas separated by an hour-glass shaped ‘botanic display’ in granitic sand. Here, informal plantings of specimen trees, shrubs and grasses are punctuated by locally sourced rocks.

The design aims to offer the feel of the Australian coast and provide the inhabitants with pleasing landscape vistas as well as intimate spaces connected to nature.
